How to Support Your Hormones Through Perimenopause
By Mary Stratos, PA-C, IFMCP · Hormonal Health
Perimenopause is not a light switch; it is a transition that can span years, and the hormonal shifts behind it are real, measurable, and supportable. Here is how we think about supporting your body through it.
Know what is actually happening
Progesterone typically declines first, which is why sleep and mood changes often arrive before cycles change. Estrogen does not simply fall; it fluctuates, which explains why symptoms can feel unpredictable. Testing at the right time, interpreted against optimal ranges, turns confusion into a map.
The foundations that move the needle
Steady blood sugar. Protein-forward meals and fewer naked carbohydrates smooth energy and mood swings that get blamed on hormones alone.
Strength training. Muscle is your metabolic and bone insurance through this transition. Two to three sessions a week changes your trajectory.
Sleep as a non-negotiable. Consistent timing, a cool dark room, and managing evening alcohol, which fragments sleep and amplifies night sweats.
Stress and your nervous system. Cortisol and your sex hormones are in constant conversation. Morning sunlight, breath work, prayer or meditation, and real rest are hormonal interventions, not luxuries.
When to bring in more support
If symptoms are interfering with your life, you do not have to white-knuckle through. Testing, targeted supplementation, and hormone therapy when clinically indicated can change this chapter entirely. The right time to ask is when you start wondering.
